3 Little Egrets still with the drake Smew and 2 Common Scoter in Toft. 6 Bewick's Swans flew calling over the Visitor Centre c10.20 (A Johnson) then headed off west over Draycote Bank, Merlin Rainbow Corner, c10 Tree Sparrows at the feeder, 2 Kingfisher, Sparrowhawk and 32 Teal. 3 Little Egrets 1 near the Inlet and 2 at the Valve Tower. Female Common Scoter off Farborough Spit, Pink-footed Goose with the Greylags so probably feral. 32 Goosander (13 drake) female Pintail Rainbow Corner with 26 Pochard there, 2 Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail and Sparrowhawk. A Great Skua in the morning increasing to 3 by the afternoon where they were seen feeding and bathing near buoy X at 13.55. A Pink-footed Goose flew through in the morning and an imm Arctic Tern from late morning. 8+ Kittiwake through, Little Egret Biggin, Yellow Wagtail below Farborough Spit, 2 Rock Pipits and 3 Dunlin Hensborough bank, Wheatear Farborough bank, Kingfisher at the Inlet and 5+ Swallow through. 2 Little Egrets mainly favouring the Inlet, Greenshank still along Hensborough bank, other waders were Grey Plover and Dunlin through. In Toft Shallows Water Rail and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. An Avocet (T Marlow) flew to Toft before being harassed by Black-headed Gulls and heading east c9.20. A Great Skua (R Mays) was in the middle of the reservoir last being seen in the gull roost 6.30pm at least. 3 Little Egrets mobile around the reservoir, 2 juv Wheatear Farborough Bank with Snipe there, Ringed Plover Biggin Bay, 6 Common Terns (2 juv) 2 Grey Wagtail Rainbow Corner, 3 Shelduck flew in late evening, Hobby and Sparrowhawk. No sign of Cattle Egret but still 7 Little Egrets along the north shore. One Black Tern still with 5 Common Tern, 12+ Yellow Wagtails and 2 Common Sandpiper. First Reed Warbler of the year near the boardwalk in Toft with Greenshank nearby. Merlin in the afternoon.  (D Cox D Hutton R Mays)
August 29th
New species for Draycote was found today by Bob Hazell. A CATTLE EGRET was initially seen in Biggin Bay before flying over the Valve Tower to the pools behind. It was then seen to fly out to the Leam Valley and later in the afternoon back towards Draycote. It was seen in the evening in Toft then mobile along the north shore till last seen flying north from Biggin Bay. 7+ Little Egrets still, 3 Black Terns and still present at dusk, 2 Redstarts below Farborough Spit with 3 Tree Sparrows there. Waders were just Dunlin near the Pontoons and a Ringed Plover over then briefly in Rainbow Corner. At least 20 Yellow Wagtails in the evening along Farborough Bank with several others over the north shore, 9 Common Terns (4 juv), a Hobby took a Swallow over the car park and at least 10 Yellow-legged Gulls in the roost. Still 5+ Little Egrets. 3 drake Common Scoters in the morning. Black Tern in the evening. It eventually settled down near the Valve Tower and was still there till 8pm at least. This is the 5th record for Draycote the last one being in July 2007. Up to 4 Whimbrel were along Draycote Bank with other birds there Hobby, 8+ Dunlin, White Wagtail and 50+ Swift. A lone Yellow Wagtail was along the neglected (today) Farborough bank. A probable Red-rumped Swallow (R & J Knightbridge) was seen from Farborough Bank flying towards the Valve Tower but not relocated. Whilst trying to relocate the Swallow a Fulmar (T Marlow) came in from the west over the reservoir. It then flew around for c an hour mainly quite high along the north and west shores but occasionally flying over the water till it was lost high to the east. 2 drake Common Scoters were in the middle with 4 Little Gulls building to 10 (7 adult) later in the afternoon with an Arctic Tern. Great Northern Diver, Long-tailed Duck and Smew were all viewable from Farborough Bank/Spit. 2 Red-breasted Mergansers were near the Inlet with 8 Goosander (1 drake) 14 Tree Sparrows at the feeder, pair of Pintail, adult Yellow-legged Gull, Raven over and Chiffchaff. Along the north shore and Toft 3 Water Rail, 2 Redpoll, 18 Siskin and 2 Grey Wagtail. In the roost a second winter Iceland Gull. (B Hazell T Marlow R Mays)
January 14th
Great Northern Diver and Long-tailed Duck off Farborough Spit though distant with the drake Smew near the Fishing Pontoons. The 2 Red-breasted Mergansers were together off Draycote Bank before going solo and elusive. 8+ Tree Sparrows at the feeder, 8 Goosander (1 drake) 9 Pintail (4 drake) Kingfisher below Draycote Bank, Water Rail, 3 Chiffchaff and 2 Raven over (B Hazell)

Great Northern Diver, Long-tailed Duck and Smew were all viewable from Farborough Bank/Spit. 2 Red-breasted Mergansers were near the Inlet/Valve Tower. 7 Goosander, 8 Tree Sparrows at the feeder, 12 Siskin along the north shore, Water Rail, 2 Raven, 2 Grey Wagtails, Treecreeper and Mistle Thrush. The Great Northern Diver, Long-tailed Duck and Smew were all viewable from Farborough Bank/Spit. 2 Red-breasted Mergansers were also off the Spit in the morning then flew to Rainbow Corner where they stayed till dusk. 17 Goosander (5 drake) 4 Tree Sparrows at the feeder, Water Rail in Toft, Raven over, Grey Wagtail and 6+ Siskin in Toft. The Great Northern Diver, Long-tailed Duck and Smew were all viewable from Farborough Bank. Red-breasted Merganser off the Overflow with 3 Red-crested Pochard there. Peregrine over and at least 3 Chiffchaff around the reservoir.
